An Ersatz Concerto (sort of) on an Ersatz Harpsichord (definitely)
For the recessional of my daughter’s wedding, I played a movement from a harpsichord concerto, sort of…
J.S. Bach had great admiration for other great composers like Vivaldi, Graun, and Albinoni. He learned about their music from scores, and in a few cases, made transcriptions of their music.
The piece I played was originally a violin concerto in E by Vivaldi. It was transcribed for harpsichord in C by Bach as a solo work. I then wrote new orchestra parts ad did some rearranging of the keyboard part to refashion a concerto.
Mozart’s first four piano concerti of his twenty seven total, are similarly arrangements of another composer’s sonatas.
As an exercise, I really learned a lot about both Bach and Vivaldi. As a present for Ashley and Justin, I will never forget the moment.
