Internet Resources: The Roots Music Listening Room and a personal recommendation

While much of this material can be found all over the internet, it is curated here in an easy to click fashion. The Roots Music Listening Room contains streaming and downloadable examples of music genres like “Early Rural Black Fiddlers”, “Vintage Hot Jazz from the 1920’s”, “Louisiana Cajun Music from 1920 to 1970”, and many others.

It is such a treasure-trove! To keep it on the internet, please follow the host’s admonition to only listen to 50 or 60 per day to preserve bandwidth. This is someone’s personal labor of love.

In the context of some of this early 20th century music, I want to steer you towards the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a contemporary African-American Carolina String Band.

The group is faithful to the tradition of the southern string band and incorporates elements of jazz and hip-hop into their sensibility. A truly extraordinary group!
