French Motets

The real find for me was the O Salutaris setting by Marcel Dupre. Compared to his considerable output for organ, Dupre’s choral music makes up a relatively small portion of his oeuvre. The motet is rather difficult. The tessitura is high for all parts and the harmony is sophisticated. However, the craftsmanship of the piece is exquisite. I particularly enjoy the soprano line’s melting descant over the recapitulation of the opening theme which is restated as a duet between the basses and altos.
